My First Podcast Interview

Today I get to share something really fun and exciting—I did my first podcast interview! I think, subconsciously, I’ve been hoping to avoid such interviews because the socially awkward introvert in me always whimpered at the prospect. However, when I was invited by Daniel to be on his podcast, The Very Serious Writing Show, I knew I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. While I had to drag my inner introvert kicking and screaming all the way there, I had so much fun and have been really excited to share it with everyone.

As part of the podcast, I’m also giving away a signed copy of Samara’s Peril! Just use the simple form below. :)

    1. Oh, and I ADORE R.J. Larson's books. <3 I now have a huge love for Biblical-feeling fantasy, and I wish more people would write it.

      Loved the podcast! :)

  3. This was an enjoyable podcast. I loved listening in on the conversation about your books, writing, and interests. Verbal communication is one of the most effective ways to communicate as a real person with other people and it brings a new, deeper, and more interesting level of connection, especially when we're used to only hearing you in writing. :)
Your tribute to your betas was quite touching... awww... And Samara's Peril - "It changes the whole series" - yes! :)
Western fantasy authored by you sounds amazing! There's so much potential there. :)
Thanks for doing this podcast! I hope there will be other things of this sort in the future!

  4. So excited for the release of the next installment of the Ilyon Chronicles! Good job on the interview, I loved to be able to hear you react to the questions that got thrown at you :) As an introvert, I know the one thing that it's often easy to get us talking about is our books…ones we write, ones we read, ones we love…I think you did great! Best wishes as you finish the home stretch for Samara's Peril.

  8. Good for you, Jaye! I thought you did a tremendous job! It's so neat to actually hear your voice, which by the way, is a lot different than I expected it to be somehow. I'm from Arizona, so to me you have a pretty strong (and cute) Midwest accent. :)

  10. It was awesome. You gave a pretty good answer to one of the questions I asked for the blog tour. I'm looking forward to what ever you write next. I suppose the at your current rate of a book per year, that it will be at least four years.
Also if you're wondering who the fangirl who suggested you is, that was me. I hope I didn't mess up your time too badly.

  11. Okay, so that was one of the most fun I've had in a long time! Loved listening! :D My introvert self relates... I would never be that brave. XD And yay for fantasy and Sherlock! I'm one of those sad Sherlock and Firefly fans, I fear. ;) THIS WAS SO FUN AAHH.

  12. Good podcast.
On the subject of genre crossovers, Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy is a dystopian fantasy. (The overlord, rather than being something new, has been in power for a thousand years.) I think the next books in the Mistborn world are set sometime around the 1800's or 1900's, but I haven't read them yet.
Also, I heard Brandon Sanderson writes off media he buys as a tax deduction.

  13. What fun!! I've only been able to listen to half of it so far because our computer is so slow (I'm hoping to get to the library so I can hear it on their computers!), but it was really great! Really neat to put a voice to what we read. :)

  15. I loved hearing your voice :) It was fun get a glimpse into your life as a interdependent publishing author. You answered some of my own questions as well as made me laugh.

Thanks for steeping outside of your introvert self:)

  17. "Bonus entry! Any questions or comments about the podcast?"

That was so much fun to listen to!
Now I'm going to be thinking all day...when is fantasy going to branch away from the "titans" (though I have to say I'll be sad when it does; Tolkien+Lewis=tireless adventure)? What'll it be like? What can I do to, possibly, give it a nudge?
And the plot bunnies scamper from their burrows... ;)

    Some questions:
How, exactly, do you deal with non-project plot bunnies? I've found that capturing them in a notebook satisfies some of them...temporarily. :P

What do you do when you outline the culture of your races? I mean, do you have a method, or do you cherry pick and adjust until they streamline?

Along the same lines, I'm insanely curious: what culture/s were the Cretes inspired by? Every time I read about them, I get this Native American-elf-in-leather type of vibe... :D

    1. :D

As for your questions, with non-project plot bunnies, I try to write them down so I don't forget them later. I usually use either OneNote or, more recently, Scrivener to take notes on potential future stories. Sometimes the plot bunnies are so loud in my head that I have to take a day or two to deal with them before I can get back to my current project. ;)

With the races in Ilyon Chronicles, I just started writing out who I envisioned their cultures pretty much just like in the race profiles in the books. I kept adding and tweaking things until I was satisfied. Plus, as I mentioned in the podcast, Pinterest was a big help. :)

You are actually spot on with my inspiration for the cretes. :D They were largely inspired by a mix of my love for Native American culture and elves. Plus, I've always wanted to live in a tree house, so I threw that into the mix as well. ;)

  21. OH WOW! JUST 1 MORE DAY TO WAIT!!!! *screams*
I LOVE your books, Jaye!! It's so awesome to read good, clean books that are Christ-centered and still well-written. Especially when they're by a fellow homeschooler!!
I've had my mom write out all my school assignments for the week, and I'm working hard to get it all done before Friday so I can have it free for an Ilyon binge!!! Do you know what time exactly the book will release on Kindle? I've had it pre-ordered for almost 2 months!
I've noticed an annoying trend in action/adventure/fantasy/sci-fi lately. The problem is that I'm seeing a rise of these strong, fighter-girls who know what they believe in and stand true to it...and they're almost always very boy-ish and un-feminine, almost crude sometimes. This always makes me a little frustrated. I think a warrior maiden that carries a sword and fights in battle, or can have her bow out and an arrow through ten enemies in a flash can be a lady, too.
I loved Kyrin for this very reason. She doesn't WANT to hurt anyone, but she won't hesitate to shoot an arrow through you if you're hurting her friends. The second book even says that she is feminine, yet she likes to hunt and can gut a deer no problem. She stands strong for what she believes in, was willing to be executed for her faith rather than give it up.
I LOVED Lady Anne, too, and for the same reasons. She has quite an attitude, and though she doesn't go into battle, she's willing to hide fugitives who are being persecuted for their faith (a faith she shares). I just love her attitude when she's around Goler, and her strength and spirit to go on with her act even when someone she loves is in danger. I could actually probably go on about Anne (and Trask too, though not because he's ladylike at all!) for awhile, they're some of my faves!!
I'll stop going crazy now :)

    1. :D I'm so glad you're enjoying the books!

I would guess SP will release around midnight. Whenever I pre-order books, I always have an email waiting for me in the morning saying it's available. :)

  22. I don't have time to listen to the whole podcast today, but I really enjoyed what I heard so far! You mention formatting your books -- do you use a special type of software for that?

I'm so very excited to read Samara's Peril!

  24. Hi Jaye! Very awesome podcast! I absolutely love the Ilyon Chronicles! And all the other series you have written! They are amazing. I can't wait for Samara's Peril!!! Thank you for writing such amazing, uplifting YA Christian books!
(There have been plenty occasions on which I have stayed up until 5AM because your books have sucked me into their fascinating pages and I can't sleep until I have finished the last page! Keep up the good work!)

  25. Its SO awesome to finally hear the voice behind the words! Congratulations on Samara's Peril's release! I am reading Resistance, but not as much as I would like due to homework (but I do my homework faster because all I want to do is get back to Ilyon!). So thank you for the motivation ;)!
