The Student and the Slave Blog Tour

Take a look at this exciting new young adult action and adventure novel, The Student and the Slave, now available for purchase! This is the third book in the Krillonian Chronicles, after The Collar and the Cavvarach and The Gladiator and the Guard.

The series is set in an alternate world that is very much like our own, with just a few major differences.  One is that slavery is legal there.  Slaves must wear metal collars that lock around their neck, making their enslaved status obvious to everyone. Another difference is the popularity of a martial art called cavvara shil.  It is fought with a cavvarach (rhymes with "have a rack"), a weapon similar to a sword but with a steel hook protruding from partway down its top edge.  Competitors can strike at each other with their feet as well as with the blades.  You win in one of two ways: disarming your opponent (hooking or knocking their cavvarach out of their hands) or pinning their shoulders to the mat for five seconds.

First, a Little Information about Books 1 and 2:

Book 1: The Collar and the Cavvarach

109466807

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is desperate to see his little sister freed. But only victory in the Krillonian Empire's most prestigious tournament will allow him to secretly arrange for Ellie's escape. Dangerous people are closing in on her, however, and Bensin is running out of time. With his one hope fading quickly away, how can Bensin save Ellie from a life of slavery and abuse?

Book 2: The Gladiator and the Guard

109466807

Bensin, a teenage slave and martial artist, is just one victory away from freedom. But after he is accused of a crime he didn’t commit, he is condemned to the violent life and early death of a gladiator. While his loved ones seek desperately for a way to rescue him, Bensin struggles to stay alive and forge an identity in an environment designed to strip it from him. When he infuriates the authorities with his choices, he knows he is running out of time. Can he stand against the cruelty of the arena system and seize his freedom before that system crushes him?

And now, The Student and the Slave, with another awesome cover by the talented
Jack Lin!

Book 3: The Student and the Slave

109466807

Is this what freedom is supposed to be like? Desperate to provide for himself and his sister Ellie, Bensin searches fruitlessly for work like all the other former slaves in Tarnestra. He needs the money for an even more important purpose, though: to rescue Coach Steene, who sacrificed himself for Bensin’s freedom. When members of two rival street gangs express interest in Bensin’s martial arts skills, he realizes he may have a chance to save his father figure after all … at a cost.
Meanwhile, Steene struggles with his new life of slavery in far-away Neliria. Raymond, his young owner, seizes any opportunity to make his life miserable. But while Steene longs to escape and rejoin Bensin and Ellie, he starts to realize that Raymond needs him too. His choices will affect not only his own future, but that of everyone he cares about. Can he make the right ones … and live with the consequences?

Excerpt

In this excerpt, Bensin, needing desperately to earn more money, hesitates on the edge of a decision he knows he may regret.

After the martial arts lesson was over for the night, Bensin ventured to approach Axel about the subject of a job. The gang leader looked around, exchanging meaningful glances with some of the others, before he replied.

“We’d been thinking of talking to you about that, actually. Now and then we do have opportunities where you could make money — a lot more money than from these lessons. As a matter of fact, we’ve got a job to do tonight. You want to make a few more hundred imps?”

Bensin hesitated. A lot of the time, he could almost forget that his friends were in a gang. He had never seen them do anything illegal, apart from the unnamed substances some of them swallowed or smoked now and then. They never even talked about illegal activities, at least, not in front of him. They did sometimes talk about the Corner Creepers, cursing as they discussed the things they’d like to do to them, sometimes in graphic detail. And now and then they would let a remark slip that made him think they had encountered their rivals recently and used some of the moves he’d been teaching them. Occasionally, some of them would show up with fresh bruises or limps, or Bensin would see a bandage poking out from under a sleeve. A couple of times, Deiv had called and asked if Bensin could switch their next lesson to a different day, or hold it earlier in the evening, because they had something else going on. And now and then they ended the night’s hangout time early, telling him there was some place they all needed to be. But they never talked about any gang activity directly. Bensin didn’t ask questions, and they didn’t tell or pressure him in any way or even suggest he join them. Not that he had ever wanted to.

But he needed the money, now more than ever.

“What kind of job?” he asked.

Mice and Marriage Blog Tour—Excerpt

What do mice and marriage have in common? I don't know, but now I'm curious to read Sophie Dawson's new book, Mice and Marriage!

About the Book

Noelle Copeland has no intention of ever letting another man break her heart. She’s content to take care of her two boys and help her brother around the church. That is until a mouse sends her onto a table screaming like she’s being murdered, and a handsome, heroic man comes to her rescue. Now, she finds her heart longing for Turner Metcalf, but he’s keeping things from her. She wonders if she can trust him not only with her heart but her sons’ hearts as well.

Turner Metcalf is a man on a mission. He’s in town for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season for one reason only; to protect his sister and her new husband. He has a secret life he isn’t willing to give up. That is until he comes to the rescue of Noelle Copeland. Now, his heart is drawn to the one thing he never thought he could have; a future. He finds himself falling for the divorced mother of two and her sons.

Can he survive his secret mission long enough to let her know? Or will his frequent travel and hidden agenda end things before they really get started? Will he live through his mission and be able to consider a future with this ready-made family? What about Noelle’s ex-husband and his new girlfriend? Will they mess things up for Noelle and Turner? Can love find a way to overcome the doubts of a woman afraid of Mice and Marriage?

Love and marriage come to us inspired by many things. Who would have thought that mold, spots, and mice would bring love and marriage? Well, they have. The Love's Infestation Series continues with Mice and Marriage.

You can find the book on Amazon!

October Blog Tour—Character Interview & Excerpt + Giveaway!

Yesterday we began a countdown. To what? The release of J. Grace Pennington's new book, October. Yep, she named her book after the month we are in. Check out the great giveaway, and the other posts in this countdown!

About the Book

For Emily Baxter, life is simple. Her world is made up completely of school, church, and the community in the small farming town she calls home. All that changes one fateful Sunday, when a new girl shows up at Pleasanton Baptist—a girl unlike anyone Emily has ever seen. A girl with long red hair, crystal green eyes, and style and posture like royalty.

A girl named October.

The months that follow are filled with magic—the magic of ordinary things, of finding pictures in the stars, of imagination and a new sense of beauty. But as time goes by, Emily begins to sense that her enchanting new friend may have secrets that could break the spell. Is October really all she seems to be?

About the Author

J. Grace Pennington has been telling stories since she could talk and writing them down since age five.  Now she lives in the great state of Texas, where she writes as much as adult life permits.  When she's not writing she enjoys reading good books, having adventures with her husband, and looking up at the stars.

Giveaway

Grace has generously offered a paperback book of her new book as her giveaway prize. You can enter at this link or the widget below.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Character Spotlight: Jackson “Jax” Miller

Jax is the third of the main characters of October.  He is Emily's cousin, neighbor, and closest friend.  Essentially he's like a brother to her, though he claims he's glad he's not really her brother because she talks too much.  She doubts that he really means this.

So who is Jax, exactly?

His name is Jackson, but everyone has always called him Jax.  He is currently seventeen and six feet, three inches.  He's quiet and good-natured, protective and soft-hearted.  He has a dry sense of humor and doesn't like to let his hair grow more than about an eighth of an inch.

He loves reading and gets good grades.  He especially loves history because he sees it as having so much to say to anyone who cares to listen.  He helps run his parents' small farm, but doesn't want to be a farmer himself.  He's not yet sure what he wants to do.

He becomes very close with October, and the three share many delightful, everyday adventures together.  She draws him out more than anyone ever has—helping him discover new talents and become a nobler version of himself.  But as Emily begins to sense hidden depths in October, how will this affect his relationship with them both?

Excerpt

The sanctuary was empty the third Friday that we walked into it. After our first time, October had insisted that we arrive early, a preference that she freely admitted was because arriving before everyone else helped her not be so overwhelmed by too many people at once.

The late afternoon sun shone through the stained glass windows on the west wall, and the only sound was the hum of the air conditioning.

Halfway down the center aisle, she stopped. I watched the dust particles floating in the multi-colored light as she turned to look at each window in turn.

Jesus with the children. Jesus turning water into wine. Jesus at the last supper. Jesus walking on the water.

She turned at last to the one of Him carrying the lost lamb, and there she stopped for a long while. I looked at the glass for a moment, eyes again drawn to the misplaced red piece in His robe, then I turned to look at her face.

It wasn't very expressive. The only spark that I could see was in her eyes, which sparkled in the rainbows. Her eyebrows drew down over her eyes slightly.

“That's my favorite,” I told her.

She took one step forward, stopped, then took two more steps, eyes fixated on the window as though she were mesmerized. “I think perhaps it's mine, too.”

She kept focusing on it, her gaze sweeping every bit of glass. I started to ramble.

“I think it's just the look on His face... and how He has His arms around it, sort of... gently, and strong. I like the way it looks... nurturing. It looks caring, don't you think so?”

She kept looking at it for a moment, then she spoke slowly. “I think... I like it because I know the story it represents. The lost sheep. And how out of a hundred sheep, ninety-nine of them good and perfectly well-behaved, he went after the one who left. The disobedient one. He was willing to leave everything good and right and go after... things that most people would say weren't worth it.”

Wanted: A Superhero to Save the World–Book Spotlight + Giveaways

WANTED Banner

Today I’m spotlighting a new middle grade novel by author Bryan Davis!

Wanted - A Superhero to Save the World

About the Book

Eddie Hertz is smart, real smart. He has to be. What other twelve-year-old patrols the streets of Nirvana alone, hoping to foil the schemes of the evil Mephisto? Since Eddie is small for his age, he trusts in his Batman-style gadgets belt and acrobatic skills as well as lots of experience, like knowing how to swing across dark alleys without being seen.

Eddie has a dream, to become like Damocles, Nirvana’s great superhero. To make that dream come true, Eddie invented a device that is supposed to give him superpowers, but using it on himself is dangerous, maybe even fatal. He doesn’t have the nerve to try it.

When Mephisto unleashes an earthquake machine on the city, Eddie gets a surprising teammate — his quirky eight-year-old sister, Samantha, who comes up with an unexpected way to help Eddie in the frantic battle to prevent the biggest earthquake of all.

Since Damocles has lost his ability to help in physical form, Eddie and Samantha are the only hope for Nirvana and the world.

Gestern Blog Tour–Excerpt + Giveaway!

I feel so bad. I was supposed to share this post yesterday, but the last week has been so crazy I completely spaced it. Anyway, even though I’m late, I’m happy to be sharing about the release of J. Grace Pennington’s newest book, Gestern. (Grace was my narrator for the Resistance audiobook, by the way.)

About the Book

You never escape your past
Andi Lloyd is more comfortable than most with interstellar travel, but she's not prepared for the perils and peculiarities of a world she has all but forgotten—the planet Earth. As the Surveyor undergoes repairs, her brother August receives a message with news that will send both of them across the world to a place he never wanted to visit again.

Neither of them are prepared to be thrust into a world of political intrigue amid the tangled forests and crumbling ruins of Austria. They aren't prepared to encounter wild animals and endure cross-country hikes. And they definitely aren't prepared to face it all alone.

But despite the dangers they must press on into the unknown to find a way to save Andi's life, to decide the fate of Earth itself—and to rescue a lonely girl who just happens to be their little sister.

Exiles Weekend Blitz–Conclusion

WeekendBlitzBanner

I wanted to take time to give a huge thanks to everyone who participated in my weekend release blitz! I’m always amazed by how many of you sign up to help me spread the word. And everyone who commented during the blitz! You’re all awesome! ;) Here’s a recap of the tour as well as a surprise or two for you at the end. :D Also, there is still time to enter the giveaway! It runs for another couple of days yet!

Reviews

“And the plot twist in this book…wow! Few other authors I know of could pull off the twist Jaye does in this book, and especially couldn’t do it and heighten the tension for the rest of the series.” – Tricia at Tricia Mingerink

“I love all the characters!! We have, like, six+ narrators throughout the whole book …. and yet, it isn’t overwhelming AT ALL, which I love!” – Alyssa at WritingAnyone

Exiles sucks the reader in, savoring every word and plot twist, until the very end.” – Meagan at Meagan Davenport

“It was so wonderful, though, to return to the characters that we love so much! And even characters I’ve known for books now, have become even more loved.” – Sara at R535 Blog

“Other books might get lost in my work schedule, buried under tasks I need to do for church, or lay temporarily forgotten while I visit friends … but not when that book contains characters as beloved and missed of Kyrin, Jace, and the others.” – Leah at Leah’s Bookshelf

“I have to tell you all right here and now, this book is very awesome. Very very very awesome.” – Shay at The Elven Padawan

“Yeah, I really liked this book, it was pretty exciting. Jaye did a good job. The setting was super cool too.” – Sam at Books and Arrows

“This book is very un-put down-able.  The moment I saw that I received an ARC from Jaye, I started reading. I finished the book late that night.” – Jess at The Artful Author

“I recommend this novel for a calm day. Have a cup of tea and a few cookies, nestle yourself in the corner of your couch with a blanket, and listen to the rain pattering against your windowpane. And read this book.” – Athelas at Red Lettering

“Readers will be squealing in surprise, horror, and delight at some of the plot twists in this one!” – Gabriellyn at PageTurners

“Trying...to...not...gush... But honestly! This might be favorite book from the series so far! I mean each book just gets better and better and this one really had me by the heart!” -  Ants and Epic at Sutori no Hana

Exiles is, simply put, a great book. I use “great” for lack of a better word (though “amazing”, “stunning”, and “nothing short of perfect” would all work too).” – Kiara at Bookends

“The book is magic. Pure, entrancing magic that will grip your spiritual, mental, and physical being with its tasteful characters, engrossing plot, and enraging twists.” – Jazzy at Thriving Hope (if you like reviews with lots of awesome gifs, read this one. xD )

“As a general summary, I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Exiles" and highly recommend it.” – Kenzi at Honey Rock Hills

“I'm usually a skeptic of long series because a person can only come up with so many ideas right? But not in this case. Somehow, Jaye made an edge-of-your-seat thriller with plenty of romance and enough adventure to keep me up until midnight, while still building the tension for the books to come!” - E.J W at One Word At A Time

“Usually, one would expect a new sequel to be lesser than the first or second (or third!), but that is not the case with this!  In my humble opinion, Exiles was awesome! if not better than the first three.” – Sarah at Sarah, Plain & Average

“While Exiles may be my least favorite of the series so far, it was, of course, good, and some long awaited and unexpected things happened!” – Natasha at A Camera and a Dreamer

“All the turmoil in the characters, the uncertainty, and getting out of their comfort zones. It was all so deep and true to real life.” – Faith at Writings, Ramblings, and Reflections

“Exiles offers the same depth of character, adventurous plot, breathtaking descriptions, and spiritual parallels as the rest of the series.” – Erika at Resting Life

“Oh. My. Goodness. This book is wonderful. Reading it was rather like going on Expedition Everest at the Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World. Such an emotional roller-coaster.” – Addyson at The Music of a Story

“You’ll need a seatbelt, believe me. It was nonstop action from there on out! So many unexpecteds. So many surprises. So many shocks. Oh my heart.” – Ivy Rose at Lakeside Publications

“I have been a huge fan of the Ilyon Chronicles since they first released, and not a single book in the series has ever failed to disappoint me. They just seem to keep getting better.” – C.M. Williams at Ember's Reviews

“The action was fantastic, with a twist at the end that.... just blew me away. After that, I think it might be an understatement to say that I am extremely excited for the next novel in the series.” – Rebekah at Backing Books

And don’t forgot to stop by my friend Morgan’s blog for her review tomorrow!

Onward in the series!

As I like to do at the end of these blog tours, I’m officially announcing the title of the next book in the series!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00026]

When a catastrophic event leaves the Landale camps reeling and stricken by a deadly illness, Jace must face the dangers of Valcré and an impossible choice to gain the cure.

goodreads

Bitter Winter is not quite as . . . epic in in scope as the first four books. It’s a more personal story. As you can probably tell by the logline, it’s a very Jace-centric book. (And has some pretty devastating things happen.) It’s the shortest book of the series. But, to make up for that, the book will also include a bonus novella. :D It’s a little story I never saw coming, but two people in Bitter Winter were making eyes at each other and demanded to have a story of their own. :P So, basically, when Bitter Winter releases, you’ll actually be getting two stories. How cool is that? I’m really looking forward to sharing it. While I don’t have a release date yet, you can see a little sneak peek of inspiration on my new Pinterest board. :)

Surprise #2!

Look what I’ve been working on in secret! :D It’s a short story of when Jace found Tyra. It’s going to be free to anyone who signs up for my emailing list. So, if you’re already signed up, you’ll get it automatically. If not, well, you can always sign up here. ;) I’ll also have a little paperback version for sale for those who have to have it on your shelf with the others. I’m hoping to have it ready to send out in the next couple of weeks or so (if life cooperates). :) Keep an eye on your inboxes.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000032_00017]

A year ago, Jace was a slave. A gladiator.

Now he has found a home with the only three people who have ever treated him with kindness.

After his first visit to town goes just as disastrously as expected, he seeks solace in the woods, where he discovers a wounded wolf pup. The merciful thing would be to put her out of her misery. However, his desire to help her is stronger. Could he possibly save her in her condition? Would ElĂ´m even care to help if Jace were to ask Him?

Announcing My Newest Endeavor

You’d think I have a lot of time on my hands. Truth is, I have pretty much NO time. Ah, how naive I was when I thought I’d have more time when I lived on my own. Still, I do what I can with whatever free time I can find. One thing I’ve always had an interest in is making book covers. Because I LOVE making book covers. I love making them even when they aren’t for my books, so I thought, why not offer some to my fellow authors, right? And that, my friends, is my new endeavor. I’ve got a little site set up and a few covers. I’ll be adding more as I can. In the meantime, you can check them out here:

Blue Jaye Book Design

I also set up a Facebook page. Whenever I make new covers, I’ll add them to the album there.

Exiles Weekend Release Blitz Signup!

WeekendBlitzBanner
I’m doing something a little bit different for the release of Exiles. Instead of doing a week long blog tour, I’m condensing it down to a three day weekend blitz. :) It’s basically the same, just in a shorter time period. For any bloggers who wish to participate, there are options for simple book spotlights, reviews, author interviews, and I will also be doing character interviews. (There are a limited number of slots for these, so if you want to interview one of my characters, make sure to sign up for it quickly!)
Also check out what fun items the blitz giveaway will contain at the end of the post!

Exiles Release Update

Okay, so I’ve never actually had to do this before. I hate that I have to now, but over the last couple of weeks, I’ve come to the realization that I have to postpone the release of Exiles. Now, before you panic, I’m only postponing it 30 days! The new release date is August 11th. You see, life is kind of kicking my butt lately. Not in overly bad ways. I just feel overwhelmed. I’ve been trying and trying to get Exiles done ASAP and constantly feeling like I’m running out of time. That is also making me hate the book and feel like I’m not doing my best and completely lose confidence in myself. So, after praying about it, I made the decision to postpone it a month and feel much better about it. Like I said, I hate to do it, but I feel this is the only way I can give Exiles the TLC and proper editing/time it needs and release a book to all of you faithful readers that I’m happy with. Now don’t worry if you already pre-ordered the Kindle version on Amazon. You’ll still get your book and don’t have to re-order or anything. It’ll just be delivered to you on the new publishing date. So go re-mark your calendars for August 11th!

Twisted Dreams

Twisted Dreams Cover front

About the Book

“I, Calandra, of the Wingans, do bestow upon you, the Princess of Hanover, a gift. You have been given long life. I cannot interfere with that, but when you are sixteen years of age, you will prick your finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into an everlasting sleep.” She stepped closer so that she could be heard only by Liesel and her parents. “Then you will at last see the truth. Be wary. Be wise. Your fate rests upon yourself.”

On her sixteenth birthday, Princess Liesel Rosanna falls victim to a sleeping curse—but wakens in another world, a prisoner of war. As the bait in a trap for her fiancĂ©, the crown prince of Hanover, Liesel longs to escape back to the fairy tale world. The world where she is only wanting a true love’s kiss to set everything to rights.

As situations quickly grow dire, Liesel must choose which story to live, which life is real. The fate of her country rests on her decision.
